Summer Trail Crew Campaign

Expected funding for this awesome opportunity for island youth became unavailable at the eleventh hour.  Some of our fabulous donors have stepped up to the plate and contributed generously but we still need to raise at least $10,000! Any help you are in a position to give will be much appreciated! Thank you for supporting our youth!

Summer Trail Crew is a professional job opportunity for Virgin Islands high school students to gain professional experience, develop leadership skills, work outdoors as part of a team, and learn about Virgin Islands National Park. The crew works in the park on St. John under the supervision of the Friends Trails Coordinator.

The eight week program runs from June 9 to August 1, 2025 and is open to Virgin Islands high school students ages 15 to 18. The Summer 2024 crew is pictured at Ram Head.

This summer work experience focuses on the maintenance of hiking trails and historic sites in the park and potential duties include digging, sawing, pruning, hauling and other physical tasks. The program also includes activities like kayaking, sailing, and learning about traditional uses of local plants and marine ecosystems.

“One of the goals of the Summer Trail Crew program is to help the participants gain an appreciation and passion for the natural world, conservation, and environmental stewardship,” says Mark Gestwicki, Program Director at Friends of Virgin Islands National Park. “It is common for crew members to return for consecutive years.”
